Intent

In line with the 2014 Curriculum for Computing, our aim is to provide a high quality computing education. We believe computing and safeguarding go hand in hand and at St Hugh, we provide a significant focus on internet safety both inside and outside the classroom setting.

As global citizens, it is the aim for children to have a secure grasp of how computers and the internet can be a tool for good with an awareness of the benefits and implications for technology. We want children to understand the growing impact of computing on the world around them.

Our intent for Computing comes from the National Curriculum purpose and aims. Our Computing curriculum will ensure that all pupils:

can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems

are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology

Implementation

Computing planning for KS1 and KS2 is based-upon the Computing Hub scheme of work ensures children are taught all the areas of the National Curriculum in an interesting and interactive way.

All children also complete the Online Safety scheme of work to enhance their knowledge and understanding of online safety.

In Reception, children have access to a range of technology such as IPads, interactive screens and sound buttons linked to the Understanding the World part of the EYFS Framework. They have opportunities to use and investigate technology during their continuous provision.

The external curriculum has been enhanced by:

Workshops in internet safety for parents, so they can be supported in how to keep their children safe.
Our Annual Internet Safety Day where children learn to be safe online which is celebrated across the school.

Across the school, children use Office Teams to access and submit their home learning. They also have access to a range of online resources to support their learning at home.

Impact

By the time they leave St Hugh, children will have gained key knowledge and skills in the three main areas of the computing curriculum: computer science (programming and understanding how digital systems work), information technology (using computer systems to store, retrieve and send information) and digital literacy (evaluating digital content and using technology safely and respectfully). We want our children to be confident with the language around computing and to apply it to develop clarity in their communication. Through specific knowledge organisers, key vocabulary is identified and taught to children to support them in successfully accessing and deepening their knowledge of the computing curriculum. The objectives within each strand support the development of learning across the key stages and EYFS, ensuring a solid grounding for future learning and beyond.

Children at St Hugh of Lincoln Catholic Primary School will:

have evidence of work showing a range of topics covered, cross curriculum links and work adapted to their individual needs
be confident users of technology, able to use it to accomplish a wide variety of goals, both at home and in school
have a secure and comprehensive knowledge of the implications of technology and digital systems. This is important in a society where technologies and trends are rapidly evolving
be able to apply the British values of democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, rule of law and liberty when using digital system.
